What is a Meme?

In simple terms, a Meme (rhymes with team) is what you call those pictures you see on Facebook that have the funny, political or ridiculous sayings on them.  I’ll skip most of  the cultural PhD definitions and go straight to the definition that most of us have come to understand:  ‘an internet information generator, especially of random or content-less information.’

ThatbegreatFor the more advanced version:  Richard Dawkins,  author of  The Selfish Gene defines meme as “a unit of cultural transmission.”  Like genes and diseases, the prevailing characteristic of memes is that they tend to replicate, just add humans. Dawkins proposes that the meme is to culture what the gene is to biology. The Internet, where replication is as easy as hitting “Like” or “Retweet,” has become one big meme pool.

There are apps and websites you can go to, to create your own memes. Just search for meme maker or meme generator.  However, using your own pictures and adding text with an image editor work just as well. Looking forward to seeing your meme posts!
