Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is more than Pay Per Click (PPC) on Google Adwords. SEM is a broader term that includes SEO. It  includes both paid search results (using Google Adwords or Bing Ads for example) and organic search results (SEO).

SEM uses paid advertising with AdWords or Bing Ads, article submissions, advertising and ensuring SEO is being done. A keyword analysis is performed for both SEM and SEO, then a plan is put in place to get your website up in rankings.

Both website marketing techniques need to be monitored and updated frequently to stay current with best practices and changes in search engine algorithms.  As the SEO organic search results begin to get you on the 1st page, you can start spending less on SEM. Eventually, you will only need to pay for clicks with a new product or service introduction.
